We’ve all faced days at the office where we’re just not feeling motivated. Off days happen to everyone and it’s tough—if not unrealistic—to constantly do your best work. There are bound to be times when you procrastinate too much, lack focus, or struggle to start important projects.

You may react by getting down on yourself, wondering where your determination has gone. It can be disappointing to feel like you’re not living up to your aspirations, especially when there’s important work to be done—which there almost always is. Speed, efficiency, and productivity are what drive results, and when our energy doesn’t match our ambition, it can be frustrating.

When you lack enthusiasm, a single day at the office can feel like an uphill battle. A long-lasting motivational slump can leave you stressed out, feeling guilty that you’re not doing enough to advance in your career.

The effects on your well-being can be numerous: You may have difficulty sleeping, find yourself getting sick, or notice a decrease in your ability to concentrate. Your mental health takes a beating from emotional exhaustion, with anxiety and pessimism overshadowing your mood.

But you don’t have to stay stuck in this rut. With some exploration and reflection, you can get to the bottom of what’s sapping your energy and dig yourself out of it.

Here are three reasons you’re unmotivated along with solutions to getting back on track fast.

1. You’re Caught in the “Busy Trap”

Today being busy is a status symbol, a sign that you’re sought-after and in-demand. While your ego may enjoy the validation, existing perpetually in “work mode” and being available round-the-clock can lead to burnout.

Operating under the illusion that staying constantly busy is helping you advance professionally can backfire, earning you the title of office pushover—or leading you to resent your job, boss, and co-workers.

To disentangle yourself from the busy trap, you’ve got to ruthlessly prioritize and eliminate non-urgent tasks, which will allow you to invest in work that’s truly important.

To get over your chronic busy-worshipping, begin to unhook yourself from responsibilities that are actually someone else’s work. Practice saying “no” more often. When you do agree to take something on, do so with a clear intention. Try saying, “I choose to…” rather than “I have to…” It may sound simple, but your words create your reality, and this subtle verbal shift invokes autonomy and personal choice, which stokes motivation. It feels very different to say “I choose go to tonight’s networking event” instead of “I have to to go to tonight’s networking event.”

2. You’re Relying on Willpower

Convincing yourself to accomplish a task out of sheer will is difficult. When willpower fails you, focus on creating habits that make your success inevitable. Often, getting started on a big goal or complicated project is the hardest part. Once you actually get going, the whole project feels a lot less daunting.

The trick to staying motivated is to create small habits that help with productivity and make you feel good about what you’re accomplishing.

Conquer willpower dips by lowering barriers that get in the way of your beginning a task. If you have a hard writing assignment to tackle, for example, focus on getting just the the first sentence down (even if it’s a stream of consciousness). But, once you write that first line, you’ll likely feel your anxiety melt away.

You can also try developing a warm-up routine that sets off a positive chain of events to help you generate momentum. For instance, maybe you have a cue like brewing your morning coffee or checking your email that serves as a transition into work mode. Many entrepreneurs I work with like to start their day with 10 minutes of meditation. This can be an excellent way to prepare for your day and cue your mind to get in the mood for work. Instead of conjuring willpower, you’ll organically move into the professional state of mind.

3. You’re Emotionally Exhausted

If you feel like you’re sleepwalking through your workday, it’s likely you’re among the 70% of people who feel emotionally disconnected at the office.

Don’t underestimate your social needs when trying to pinpoint your motivational barrier. Maslow’s pyramid ranks belonging as the third most important aspect of our mental health, coming only after physical needs and safety. Feeling accepted and useful at work is essential to sustaining the drive to stick with your duties day after day.

In fact, “psychological safety” has been found to be the most important trait successful teams share. Groups characterized by interpersonal trust and mutual respect are not only happier, they’re also more productive. When employees have a sense of confidence that their co-workers will not embarrass, reject, or punish them for speaking up they accomplish more and thrive in their careers.

To repair your emotional exhaustion, begin deliberately structuring social opportunities into your workflow. An easy way to start is by showing up five minutes early to meetings. Use the unstructured time for light conversation. This informal small talk is not just meaningless chitchat, and it goes a long way to building stronger relationships with colleagues.

If you’re a manager, try reigniting your team’s motivation by giving day-to-day tasks more meaning and circling back to shared goals. Empathic leadership has everything to do with lifting up other people, which can be accomplished by reinforcing how your direct report’s efforts tie into to big-picture goals and the company’s mission.

No one among us is motivated and productive 100% of the time, but if you’re feeling lethargic and blasé about your work more often than not, then you’ve got to find a way to climb out of the slump. Reading inspiring tips and career advice is one thing, but taking action is another. Doing something to alleviate the lethargy is the real antidote to getting unstuck and out of a work rut.

How to choose the best golf irons for you

Many golfers take great care in selecting the perfect driver, but plough on with a set of hand-me-down irons they’ve had for a decade. Considering you’re likely to hit your driver a dozen times in a round, at most, and hit 25-40 iron shots, it makes sense to put a lot of care into choosing the perfect irons for your golf game. If you’re thinking about buying a new set of irons, here’s what you should consider…

Blades, cavity backs or game improvement irons?

 Irons come in a vast array of styles, all designed to suit different capabilities. Blades are aimed at the best ball strikers, and offer little to no forgiveness when you don’t hit the centre of the club. Cavity backs are aimed at those wanting a good degree of playability, so off-centre hits are less harshly punished. And super game improvement models tend to have wider soles, more offset and often hollow bodies to offer ultimate forgiveness and help launch shots into the air.     

Which ones are best suited to you will depend on your ability, what suits your eye, and your typical impact pattern.  

Forged or cast irons?

At some point in their construction both were made of molten metal. Forged irons come from billets of steel stamped under massive force into a clubhead shape. This stamping is said to align the structure more closely for, it’s claimed, better feel. Cast heads are created by molten steel poured into moulds. Casting technology has moved on massively and it’s said heat treatment after casting combined with the type of steel used today mean a cast head can feel very much like a forged.     

Should I worry about the type of steel?

Thinking changes from time to time about which is the best. What is more important is trying the irons to see how they feel for you. 

Should I consider the sole?

Yes. Wider soles mean more weight lower down, which helps get shots airborne. It also won’t dig as much at impact. Wider soles equal game improvement. Narrower soles tend to be found on better player irons. Some irons now have bevelled soles to allow the club to better interact with the turf and lose less energy at impact.   

What does offset do?

Larger amounts of offset is usually found in game improvement irons. It sets the face behind the hosel, giving a little more time to square the face at impact. Better player irons generally have less offset so the leading edge is much more in line with the hosel. This makes the club a little easier to ‘shape’, as the centre of gravity is further forward, hence why shot shapers often love forged irons.   

Is gapping important?

Yes. While manufacturers ensure you have accurate gaps between each iron, you need to look at the gap between the longest iron you’re comfortable hitting and the next club you have, whether it be a fairway or hybrid. Don’t have a couple of clubs that go the same distance. You should also consider the gap between your shortest iron and any wedges you have – you want to have standard gaps here of, say, 10-15 yards at the most. 

Do hollow body irons work?

They are growing in popularity, as they deliver the same sort of playability benefits as woods/hybrids. Typically the heads are made in a couple of pieces with the springy steel faces welded on. If you find hybrids easy to hit and want lots of playability and distance in one, a hollow body Callaway Big Bertha or Nike Vapor Fly might be a decent option.   

Why are shafts now lightweight?

Steel iron shafts have got lighter. It wasn’t long ago Dynamic Gold shafts were the norm and they weigh over 120g. Standard stock steel shafts are now 80g-90g. Why? Manufacturers say if a shaft is lighter and you swing at the same speed the club is going to travel faster, increasing distance. 

Custom-fit or off the shelf golf irons?

Custom-fit. You wouldn’t buy a pair of shoes or suit without getting your correct size, so why buy a set of clubs without being fitted?  

Are multi-material heads the saviour? 

Manufacturers employ fancy metallurgy and materials science to come up with new ways of improving forgiveness. Whether it’s light metals, alloys or Nike’s RZN material, all are moving mass away from ineffective areas of the club to areas where it can improve stability, stiffness or flexibility.   

Will a lighter or heavier iron give me more power? 

A new kinetic energy theory is seeping into whole ranges of golf clubs. Effectively it’s all about swinging at the same speed, but getting the head travelling quicker at impact. The thinking reduces shaft weight (or plays with its profile so weight is nearer the head) and increases head weight to allow golfers to gain extra clubhead speed even though they swing at the same pace. We’ve tested a few ranges designed on this principal and they’re really effective. If you describe your swing as an average to slower speed, Yonex’s E-ZONE XPG or Srixon’s Z355 ranges could be right up your street.

Coronavirus: What to Do if You’re Out of Work

Coronavirus—aka COVID-19. It has flooded our social media, nightly news, and has even made its way into some of our communities. It goes without saying that this thing has created mass hysteria and panic across the globe. But if you’re looking for that here—you won’t find it.

We haven’t lost our hope, and you shouldn’t either. We’re going to get through this, folks. Emotions are running high surrounding the coronavirus, and it feels like there’s so much uncertainty. But you don’t need to live in fear.

Yes, this virus has impacted all of us, whether it’s by coming down with the sickness itself, becoming filled with anxiety from the news, or being out of work (and out of a paycheck). We’re all feeling it in some way. And with 78% of Americans living paycheck to paycheck,1 it’s easy to see why the loss of even just one paycheck could be devastating. 

Will You Miss a Paycheck Due to the Coronavirus?

It’s no secret that things are shutting down all across the world. And if your workplace has closed its doors and isn’t offering pay, then it’s time for you to (calmly) regroup and get some things in order. The thought of being without a paycheck can be overwhelming. But we don’t want to scare you. We want to give you sensible, level-headed actions to take. But first, step back and take a big, deep breath.

3 Things to Do When You Miss a Paycheck

1. Get on a budget.

If you aren’t already living on a budget, the time is now! Making a monthly budget will show you exactly where your money is going—no ifs, ands or buts about it.

Without a budget, you really can’t make every dollar stretch because you might not even know how much money you have to work with. Plus, your budget will show you places where you can cut back and save money (more on that later). And you don’t have to rely on a yellow lined notebook to crunch the numbers.

Adjust your budget to live off of that one income for the time being. It might be tough to switch up your lifestyle, but you’ve got to make temporary sacrifices to get through this.

2. Take care of the Four Walls.

When the going gets rough—like it is right now—you need to focus on the things you really need to survive. We call these the Four Walls. Forget the student loan payment, the vet bill and the cell phone bill (for now). The Four Walls are your priority, so pay for these things in this orderbefore anything else:

  1. Food
  2. Utilities
  3. Shelter
  4. Transportation

3. Look for things to cut.

his is the time to cut back on any unnecessary expenses that you can. Tighten it up. Stop or pause your subscriptions. They aren’t going anywhere, and you can easily pick them back up once everything blows over and you have extra cash to spend again.

Don’t forget to call your cable, internet and cellular providers to see if there’s anything they’ll do to work with you during this time. Be open and honest, and let them know your situation. You’ll never know if you don’t ask! And since you already have them on the line, go ahead and downgrade or pause your service for now. None of these things fall into the Four Walls, remember?

And have you heard of this thing called “social distancing?” It means people are encouraged (and want) to stay away from each other right now. Which can make it easier to not spend money. Sports venues are closed, Disneyland is closed—heck, even bars are closed. And even if places are open, this is a time when most people are staying home anyway. Your friends probably won’t pressure you to go hit the town this weekend. That’s good news for your budget.

We know making sacrifices like this can feel like adding insult to injury when you’re already hurting. But keep reminding yourself: This is not forever. We’re going to make it through this! You’re making temporary sacrifices to tread water until this storm passes and you’re back on your feet again.

Don’t Lose Your Hope

Here’s a great way to keep track of your daily water intake. Draw lines on your water bottle with a marker pen, and then write the time beside the marked level. The marking will serve as a visual reminder for you to drink water, and it will help you achieve your daily water intake requirement.

Dry your clothes faster

If you don’t have a dryer and need to dry your clothes quickly, here’s what you can do. Place your wet clothing on a dry towel. Roll the towel with the garment inside. Pick it up, and twist it as tightly as possible to squeeze out the excess water. After you’ve drained the excess water, hang your garment on a hanger to fully dry.
